Hi K! If you check out my youtube channel, all my past videos before the b.c. (big  chop) lol, are all videos of me styling my  when I was stretching/ transitioning. Transitioning can be very difficult, because you have so many textures going on in your hair The key is you keep your hair nice and soft, and MOISTURIZED!  It will make your life so much more easier. When washing your hair  try washing in sections, and detangle your hair   as slowly and gentle as possible. I actually have a detailed video called how to transition to natural hair on my channel, here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evGbMHZT7rU if you haven't seen it already.

When  transitioning I recommend  you just stick to the regimen you know, if there is anything crazy damaging like horrible ingredients, or heat, you can avoid doing.  But keep doing what has been working for you on your relaxed hair journey, and after you do the big chop, then go ahead and explore other products, because what may work on your natural hair, may make you're relaxed ends cringe, and discourage you on your journey, or make you feel like your wasting your money( trust me I know  lol ). Just remember moisture, moisture, moisutre! Thank you so much for writting me, and please let me know if I can share your question with others on my channel!

Happy healthy hair journey

Hello, I have a couple natural hair questions.

1. I am trying to go natural and i haven't had a perm in so long, in the mean time i had box braids installed to prevent low manipulation from my hair. But when i took the braids out after 3/4 months my hair was so thick and it shrunk big time, what would prevent that? I am starting to see thicker and fuller strands which is great but i am also seeing my natural curl pattern as well. But my concern is the really thickness and the drastic shrinkage. Would you have any suggestions on that?

Hi M! I hate to have to tell you, when it comes to natural hair shrinkage just comes with the  territory. Have you ever watch Naptural85(I love her), her hair is over 20 inches, down her back, but if she washes it.. it's right on her shoulder. However, you would never know because she does a lot of semi-protective styles,as do I. Those protective styles would be your bantu knots, braid outs, twist out, flat twist outs.. anything that will manipulate your hair texture and stretch out your curl pattern, inorder to see more of your length.

If your looking more for a stretched wash and go look, there are techniques likes banding which could help elongate your curls...and there are a bunch of videos on youtub,e with ladies showing that method. Besides from that (I'm not sure of your curl pattern) you can try curling creams to help with definition, and give a little extra length, the thicker the cream, the heavier it is on the hair, and the more stretched it will be (to a point of course). After awhile I just learned to embrace the shrinkage.. I can go from a  flat twist out with my hair at my shoulder, to a cute fro above my ears lol. Let me know if I  can share your question on my blogg! Happy healthy hair journey!

Hi Crys! My name is Toni Johnson and I just finished watching one of your videos. It inspired me to email you about my current woes and why I decided to go natural.

My Hair History: I did not get my first relaxer until I was in the 9th grade. So I was about 13 years old when I received my first relaxer. Before that I used to get my hair hot combed every two weeks. When I started getting relaxers I only got them every 8 weeks and I went to the beautician ever 2 weeks for a wash and set. Then came college! I pretty much stuck to the same routine until I realized I could relax my own hair. Same routine the only difference is that I was doing the relaxers myself. That was about 2008, my sophomore year in college when I started relaxing my own hair. I also kept up the habit of greasing my scalp every two days because my hair will soak up moisture. It wasn't until 2013 when I started thinking about going natural, just because I was curious about what my natural texture is like, that I found out that I also need to make sure that I am moisturizing my ends.

Well now I am 5/6 months post relaxer, I do not know out to braid to the scalp, and I am freaking out because I want to cut off all my relaxed ends. I have hit the wall. I don't want to give up on my transitioning phase because I don't think I'm ready to be completely nature yet. I'm still in the "OMG I am really doing this" stage. Simply because I just made the "ok I will transition." decision this past December after not having a relaxer for so long. HELP ME NOT FREAK OUT AND CUT OFF ALL MY HAIR!

I'll send you pictures so you'll know why I'm freaking out about the amount of hair that I will lose if I give in to the "Cut my hair freak out!"

Transitioner Trying Not To Give Up,

TJ

Hi Tj!Thank you so much for your patience, I've just been a little overwhelmed lately.   Also, thank you so much for sharing your story.. it's actually very similar to mine! I  went to the hair dresser around 10-11 years old to get my first perm, and then right before college I began to  perm my own hair, because it was much easier since  I'm out in the country. While on my "relaxed hair journey", I would stretch for about 5-6 months, and then get a perm, until I got curious about my texture and kept stretching. NOW.. I had no idea how to style my hair, but through practice and through the help of YouTube, I learned how to  cornrow or do braids.

Now cornrowing all the way to the root can be a bit tricky.. so start off with flat twisting it's much easier to grasp, and I actually prefer the results. There are always twist outS, bantu knot outs, or protective styles. Sometimes if your doing braids for a braid out, you can place a bobby pin at the very root to prevent puffiness.  DON'T FREAK OUT! lol I was to scared to go super short hair, so I transitioned for about a year and  3 months...yes my hair  was short, but not twa lenght. I have a bunch of transitioning videos, on how I styled my hair and blended it with my relaxed hair. Don't stress love! Happy healthy hair journey, and please let me know if I can share your question!
